Urban Agriculture Learning Lab

The Career and Technology Centre at Central Memorial High School in Calgary has been building new garden boxes and exploring hydroponics so that their current Natural Sciences classroom includes an urban agriculture learning lab that will allow students to grow a variety of plants in an indoor setting including fruits, vegetables and fungi. The food grown is supplied to the school’s culinary program, donated to local food banks, or sold through the class store.

Inside Education’s Cultivate summits are designed to increase students’ understanding of food security in Alberta through the exploration of sustainability, accessibility and technology and innovations in agriculture. The development of school or community-based projects that focused on agriculture opportunities in students’ communities were part of the learning experiences at Cultivate. This student project is generously shared by Inside Education. Find out more about their youth summits on their website.
